The Tim Tebow era with the New York Jets is likely over with the team either on the verge of releasing the popular backup quarterback or trading him elsewhere. The team appears to be leaning towards simply letting Tebow go, but a trade possibility might emerge during the off-season that may benefit the team more than releasing the former Florida standout.
Although the Jets never gave Tebow a chance to shine under center or to prove that his successful season with the Denver Broncos was nothing more than a fluke, the former Heisman trophy winner will still be a desirable free agent on the open market with a few teams taking interest in Tebow.
A probably destination for Tebow may be with the Jacksonville Jaguars. Tebow is a popular figure in Jacksonville and has been linked with the Jaguars ever since he was drafted out of Florida.
Regardless of the Jets’ next move with Tebow, it’s safe to say the backup will be with another team next season. The real question is whether or not he’ll be successful from here on out, but Tebow’s former coach Urban Meyer believes he needs to be in the right offensive system via Michael David Smith of Pro Football Talk:
“We watched RGIII at the Washington Redskins, Wilson at the Seahawks, the new quarterback at the 49ers, and Carolina, and they are actually running a spread offense in the NFL,” Meyer said. “So my hope is, and I’m sure Tim feels the same way, is to go play in one of those systems where they let him play.”
Meyer may have a point in terms of Tebow playing in the right system. The Broncos catered to Tebow last year and made it to the playoffs riding the two-time BCS champion all the way. The right system may be exactly what is needed for Tebow to become relevant once again in the NFL.
It remains uncertain at this point in time where Tebow will ultimately land. The Jets have given no indication exactly what they plan to do with the backup quarterback, but he’ll be let go one way or another before next season.
