they were crushed by the New England Patriots in the playoffs.
With a vastly improved defense led by J.J. Watt and the offense as good as it gets in the NFL when firing on all cylinders, the Texans could be a force for years to come in AFC. The one glaring problem for the Texans moving forward is the inconsistent play of veteran quarterback Matt Schaub.
Although a solid quarterback at times, Schaub has yet to prove himself in big games or clutch situations for the Texans leading to speculation Schaub may be on a short leash.
Texans General Manager Rick Smith has shown some concern about Schaub moving forward. Smith believes Schaub needs to step up in these big games via Michael David Smith of Pro Football Talk:
“Quarterbacks are judged by championships,” Smith said. “That’s just a function of the position. That’s just the reality. And he understands that. He knows that. And he does have to play better in those situations for us to take our team to the next level.”
With the team signing Schaub to a massive contract extension before last season, the team has gone all in with the veteran gunslinger and will have limited options moving forward. Schaub will be arguably the one player under the most pressure to produce next season with Houston.
Fortunately, the Texans do have viable backup options behind Schaub that the team may start to lean on if the veteran continues to struggle in big games. T.J. Yates
and Case Keenum will be the backups for the Texans moving forward.
