The Los Angeles Rams improved to 2-0 in the preseason with a 23-22 win over the Los Angeles Chargers at SoFi Stadium on Saturday night.

Stetson Bennett played every snap at quarterback and turned in one of his better performances as a pro, completing 28 of his 40 passes for 324 yards and three touchdowns, including the game-winning touchdown pass to wide receiver Tru Edwards with five seconds left to cap off an action-packed fourth quarter.

Bennett was happy to lead the Rams to a win and praised his teammates for putting him in that position, via Stu Jackson of TheRams.com:

“It was pretty cool, I’m not gonna lie, because I was tired out there,” Bennett said, when asked what the victory meant to him. “That was a hard-fought one, and I think everybody out there at the end, defense getting us the ball back, it was pretty sweet.”

The Rams scored a go-ahead touchdown to end the third quarter, but their lead was short-lived as the Chargers went back ahead when Luke Grimm returned a 66-yard punt to the end zone.

Bennett was almost able to move the offense into the red zone on the Rams’ next possession, but the drive ended when he threw his only interception of the game.

After forcing a three-and-out, the Rams got the ball back again, only for another drive to end because of a turnover on downs.

However, the Rams defense stepped up and gave Bennett another chance for redemption. The former Georgia Bulldog made the most of his opportunity as he converted a pair of fourth-down conversions, including a deep ball to Brennan Presley, before throwing the game-winning touchdown on the team’s final drive.

Aubrey Pleasant was Rams head coach against Chargers

The Rams tend to give their backup players most of the reps in preseason games, and assistant coaches assume more responsibility as well.

That again played out in Saturday’s matchup against the Chargers as Aubrey Pleasant served as the team’s head coach.

Pleasant is now 2-0 as the Rams’ acting head coach, having previously earned a victory against the Chargers last year in the preseason as well.

Pleasant is entering his seventh season with the Rams across two stints and second as assistant head coach and passing game coordinator. He was elevated to assistant head coach last year after serving as defensive backs coach in 2023, clearly earning the respect of Sean McVay and everyone in the organization.
