After becoming the youngest head coach in NFL history to win a Super Bowl, there were reports suggesting that Sean McVay could step away from the Los Angeles Rams and go into an early retirement.
The 36-year-old seemingly put any doubts to bed when he egged on Aaron Donald to “run it back” at the team’s championship parade. McVay’s fiancé, Veronika Khomyn, later clarified in an Instagram story that her future husband has no plans of retiring at this time.
McVay has since confirmed he will be back on the sidelines for his sixth season as head coach of the Rams. The team responded to the news by tweeting the famous GIF from ‘The Wolf of Wall Street.’
McVay revealed that returning to the Rams was an easy decision and attributed it to the players and coaches he enjoys working with, per Stu Jackson of TheRams.com:
McVay said there was “never a doubt” about his commitment to coaching the Rams.
While broadcasting is something he’s had an interest in, he said he loves coaching and the Rams’ players.
“More than anything, you really find a purpose when you’re coaching and you’re you’re working with people and people that you love, and I think there was real purpose behind this team,” McVay said. “There’s a lot of passion and purpose. And I think those things, you know, continue to carry you on.”
Since taking the helm as head coach in 2017, McVay has led the Rams to a 55-26 record and two Super Bowl appearances. He has two years remaining on his contract but presumably will sign an extension at some point this offseason.
Had McVay retired, there was speculation he would pursue a career in broadcasting. Amazon reportedly was prepared to offer him a five-year, $100 million contract to become the voice of Thursday Night Football.
