The 2019 season has certainly not gone the Los Angeles Rams had hoped. Although the team came out hot, winning their first three games, things seemed off.
For starters, the defense was out performing the offense, often winning the games. Now after the defense has seemingly regressed, the Rams are faced with dealing with their second loss in a row after dropping a tough game to the Seattle Seahawks, 30-29, on Thursday Night Football.
It looked as if the Rams were in a position to win the game as Jared Goff drove the offense down the field in the final two minutes, setting up a game-winning field goal attempt from Greg Zuerlein, who is normally one of the most reliable kickers in the league. He had a rare miss though, and all of a sudden the Rams dropped to 3-2 after back-to-back losses.
Los Angeles did a good job to bounce back, but not enough to earn the win. Despite the tough divisional loss, head coach Sean McVay expressed confidence in the Rams moving forward in his postgame press conference:
“I think ultimately, we have the expectations and we came in here to try win a game. Like I said, credit them, they did a good enough job to get the win, but there’s 11 games for sure left this season, so we got a lot of football left. The season never stops after five games. It’s been two disappointing weeks for us, but I can promise you that we’ll find a way to bounce back. Our team is mentally tough, we’re resilient, and we got a great team coming up when we get back from this thing. It’s disappointing, but we’ll stay connected and we’ll find a way to respond, and I trust that.”
McVay and the Rams have yet another important game against a divisional foe in their next matchup as they welcome the currently undefeated San Francisco 49ers to town in Week 6.
Despite the loss, one positive to take away was that Goff had perhaps his best game of the season and despite the lack of a run game, the offense was able to effectively move the ball down the field all night.
There are no moral victories in the NFL, and if the Rams want to win their division, Week 6 against the 49ers may be a must-win.
