The Los Angeles Rams are just about to ready roll into the 2022 season as voluntary workouts are coming to a close while mandatory minicamp is just a week away.
Most of the young players have been in attendance at the training facility, while the team’s stars are working out on their own time elsewhere. With everything running normally, the biggest item for the Rams’ offseason is getting a contract extension done for Aaron Donald.
Donald and Los Angeles have been in talks on a possible new deal and head coach Sean McVay continues to say things are trending in the right direction, via Cameron DaSilva of USA Today:
“We’ve had great dialogue,” McVay said Monday. “The goal all along has been to try to get this thing figured out, but also like I’ve said, if there’s anybody that’s earned the right to make the decision on their own terms after what he’s done, what he’s meant to me, to our team, it’s Aaron. Things are trending in the right direction. None of that is new news. We have regular dialogue with Aaron and the goal is to figure out how to get a contract done that he feels good about, that we feel good about and have him continue to do his thing for the Rams leading the way.”
Donald has held out of team activities before, so unless a deal gets done soon he could conceivably no-show. He even recently said that retirement is still a possibility if he is unable to come to terms on a new contract. However, McVay is optimistic his star defensive tackle will be in attendance next week:
But when asked if Donald will be at mandatory minicamp next week, McVay said “I think so.”
“That’s the plan right now. So we’ll see. I sure hope so, so I don’t have to answer your questions next week about it,” McVay joked. “No, I think he’ll be here. That’s the plan.”
As things stand, it would seem Donald will be at minicamp regardless of his extension status. With how things are going, though, it feels like it should get done sooner rather than later.
