Sean McVay Hopeful Rams Can Sign Marcus Peters To Contract Extension

Last offseason, the Los Angeles Rams made a blockbuster trade with the Kansas City Chiefs, acquiring Marcus Peters.

In his first season with the Rams, Peters did not quite play at the same level he did in Kansas City. He dealt with some injuries though that he played through and helped get the Rams to the Super Bowl for the first time in 18 years.

Peters is now in the final year of his contract with the Rams and head coach Sean McVay is hopeful that they can sign him to an extension to keep him in Los Angeles long-term, via Myles Simmons of TheRams.com:

“We are excited about building into year two, and we’ve been really pleased with Marcus — especially pleased with what you can find out with all the experiences that we went through in one year,” McVay told assembled reporters at the coaches breakfast. “The talent is there, love the person, and he is passionate about the game. That was the one thing that — we talked about it a lot last year — but when you got guys that love football and that are good people, at the end of the day you can work with that. The passion and the different things — you love that — and I’ve loved working with Marcus so far.”

Peters played in all 16 games for the Rams during the 2018 NFL season, defending eight passes and intercepting three of them. Advanced statistics show that he was much better in the second half of the season than the first half.

Aqib Talib is also in the final year of his contract with the Rams. Los Angeles will likely not be able to keep both of them after this season, but considering Peters is 26 and Talib is 33, their priority will surely be retaining Peters.
