The Los Angeles Rams were officially put on the clock this past week when the Philadelphia Eagles inked quarterback Carson Wentz to a four-year, $128 million extension that goes through the 2024 season.
Wentz was the No. 2 overall pick in the 2016 NFL Draft, and the only player taken ahead of him was Rams quarterback Jared Goff as Los Angeles traded up to select him out of Cal.
Goff and Wentz have both proven their teams right for drafting them as they have combined for three Pro Bowls and three division championships in their young careers.
With Wentz locked up though, it seems logical to expect Goff to be next despite the Rams recently picking up his fifth-year option on his rookie contract to keep him in the organization through the 2020 season.
Rams head coach Sean McVay recently addressed Goff’s contract situation, saying that he doesn’t see him playing for any other organization, via Greg Beacham of the Associated Press:

Rams COO Kevin Demoff recently echoed McVay’s thoughts, preaching Goff’s importance to the organization as they get set to potentially begin contract extension negotiations.
Goff’s tenure with the Rams got off to a rough start in his rookie season under head coach Jeff Fisher, but his career has really taken off since McVay took over before the 2018 season.
In two seasons under McVay, Goff has been named a Pro Bowler twice and has led the Rams to two division titles, going 24-8 overall in the regular season. The Rams went all the way to the Super Bowl in 2018 before falling to the New England Patriots.
While it seems unlikely that they will get an extension done before the start of this season, it will be something to keep an eye on moving forward as both sides seem to be on the same page about what needs to eventually be done.
