The Los Angeles Rams got the opportunity to celebrate during Week 17 as they won the NFC West after beating the Arizona Cardinals and seeing a series of matchups go their way.
Not only did the Rams win the division, but they also saw the Seattle Seahawks get eliminated from playoff contention despite their own Week 17 win against the Chicago Bears.
While Seattle has nothing left to play for this season, the game still carries playoff seeding ramifications for Los Angeles. The Rams will host a Wild Card game no matter what, but could enter the 2025 NFL Playoffs as either the third or fourth seed.
A win for Los Angeles would secure the third seed, but a loss plus a Tampa Bay Buccaneers win would drop them to the fourth seed. While winning and claiming the third seed would be more advantageous, head coach Sean McVay has already announced several players will miss the contest.
Health was a major issue for the Rams to begin the 2024 season, so it’s smart for McVay and the organization to rest their key regulars before the postseason.
Rams Offense vs. Seahawks Defense
McVay will be sitting out most of his offensive starters against the Seahawks. Matthew Stafford, Cooper Kupp, Puka Nacua, Kyren Williams, Alaric Jackson and Kevin Dotson will all be sitting, while other players like Steve Avila and Beaux Limmer could be pulled early. Rob Havenstein will miss the game due to injury, though could be ready to go for the playoffs.
Jimmy Garoppolo is in line to make his first start this season, along with Blake Corum who will be replacing Williams. Meanwhile, players like Jordan Whittington and Tutu Atwell will handle the bulk of receiver responsibilities.
The Seahawks defense has been solid for the regular season, though could also sit some starters given the lack of stakes.
Rams Defense vs. Seahawks Offense
All of the Rams’ defensive starters are expected to play, though will likely be limited. Because of the group’s collective youth, McVay will give them more reps to tune up for the postseason though should eventually sit them as well.
Meanwhile, the Seahawks could opt to play veterans like Geno Smith who have contract incentives they can achieve. Seattle would also probably want to end the season on a high note, so they’ll be plenty motivated.
Rams Keys to Victory
1. Get Jimmy Garoppolo into a passing rhythm early
Garoppolo may be a backup, but he has a lot of experience as a starter in the NFL and should be able to keep the offense on schedule. Dialing up easy throws for Garoppolo should be a priority for McVay so the veteran can shake some rust off.
2. Force Geno Smith out of the pocket
Smith is an excellent passer when he has time to work in a clean pocket, but isn’t great when throwing off the move. Seattle’s offensive line has been shaky this season, so Los Angeles should have opportunities to generate pressure on Smith.
