The Washington Redskins transformed from one of the worst teams in the NFL into a playoff team with rookies Robert Griffin III and Alfred Morris leading the way under center.
The Redskins were a mediocre team in the first-half of the season with three wins in the first nine games, but Griffin and company were resilient finishing strong with seven straight wins to clinch the NFC East division title for the first time since 1999 and punch their ticket to the playoffs.
Heading into the playoff matchup against the Seattle Seahawks, the Redskins had a few things going in their favor. The game was being played at FedEx Field in Washington and Griffin was healthy enough to play. Griffin battled through the knee injury suffered in Week 14 to get back on the field, but may have returned much too soon as the Baylor product clearly wasn’t ready against the Seahawks.
As a result of Griffin rushing to get back to form and head coach Mike Shanahan neglects to pull the rookie, the former Heisman trophy winner went down with a gruesome knee injury in the playoff game against Seattle. Griffin’s knee resulted in a partially torn LCL and ACL that required surgery.
With Griffin rehabbing from knee surgery to repair the partially torn ligaments, Drew Brees of the New Orleans Saints will step in for the rookie on the NFC Pro Bowl roster according to NFL.com:
Drew Brees will replace injured Washington Redskins rookie quarterback Robert Griffin III on the NFCPro Bowl roster, the New Orleans Saints announced Wednesday.
The Saints may have had an off year as a result of the bounty scandal and head coach Sean Payton’s suspension, but Brees was as solid as ever. Brees threw for 5,177 yards, 43 touchdowns and 19 interceptions this season. More than deserving of a Pro Bowl roster spot.
