The Los Angeles Rams traveled to Ford Field to take on the Detroit Lions Sunday afternoon, and despite quarterback Case Keenum setting a franchise record with 19 straight completions, his final pass was an interception and the Rams could not come back as they fell 31-28.
Both teams got the scoring started early as the Lions opened up the game with an eight-play, 75-yard drive capped off by a touchdown from Matthew Stafford to the league’s leading receiver going into the day, Marvin Jones Jr. from seven yards out to put the Lions up 7-0.
The Rams responded with a 10-play, 75-yard drive of their own that ended with a 20-yard touchdown pass from Keenum to Kenny Britt to tie the game.
After the Lions were forced to punt the Rams again drove down the field with ease as Keenum repeatedly found open receivers, and finished off the drive himself on a 1-yard run to put the Rams in front 14-7.
That lead did not last long though as Stafford drove his team down the field and threw his second of four touchdown passes on the day tying up the game with just over three minutes before halftime.
Los Angeles did not just sit on the ball and head into the locker room with the game tied though, as Keenum led a 10-play, 80-yard drive just before halftime. That is when perhaps the turning point of the game happened though as the Lions defense was able to stuff running back Todd Gurley at the 1-yard line on fourth and goal on the last play before halftime keeping the game tied.
Detroit scored first in the second half on their first drive as Stafford connected with veteran Anquan Boldin on a 4-yard touchdown pass with just under 10 minutes remaining in the third quarter.
On the first play of the ensuing drive Keenum again connected with Britt for 47 yards which led to a touchdown pass from Keenum to tight end Lance Kendricks to once again tie the game.
The two teams then exchange touchdowns with Britt catching his second touchdown of the game and Golden Tate catching his first leaving it all tied up at 28-28 with just over six minutes remaining.
The Rams then had a three-and-out as Keenum snapped his franchise record 19 consecutive completed pass streak by throwing two incompletions in a row. Detroit capitalized and kicked a field goal to go out in front 31-28 with roughly a minute and a half remaining in the game and no timeouts left for Los Angeles.
Keenum then made his only mistake in the game, throwing the interception on just the second play of the drive securing the victory for Detroit.
With the loss Los Angeles falls to 3-3 on the season. Next week they will travel to London where they play the New York Giants at 6:30 a.m. Pacific time.
