The Los Angeles Rams are looking to improve upon their dismal 2016 NFL regular season record and under new head coach Sean McVay, the offense should produce more points. The Rams finished last in offensive efficiency, struggling to produce points due to poor quarterback play and a lack of offensive firepower.
Another issue for the Rams on offense was their offensive line. Defenses were able to shed guards and tackles, forcing either Case Keenum or Jared Goff to make decisions under duress. Greg Robinson, the starting left tackle for the team, was one of the culprits for the offensive line’s poor showings. According to Gary Klein of Los Angeles Times, the team may have decided on his future:
“The Rams will not exercise their fifth-year option on offensive lineman Greg Robinson, the No. 2 pick in the 2014 draft, the team announced Tuesday.”
Robinson has struggled mightily with penalties, leading the league with 31 penalties over the last two seasons. Despite only being 24 years old, the former second overall pick has only managed to show flashes and has never remained consistent protecting his quarterback for extended stretches. He was benched twice last season, which began rumblings that the team would not be looking to pick up the option on his contract.
The Rams signed left tackle Andrew Whitworth to a three-year, $33.7 million contract which moves Robinson to the starting right tackle position. Whitworth’s arrival is a signal that Los Angeles appears ready to move on from Robinson after the conclusion of next season, but for the time being, Robinson will still be starting along the offensive line.
