The Los Angeles Rams announced on Monday that they have waived tight end Kendall Blanton and safety Terrell Burgess.
Both contributed to the Rams’ Super Bowl a season ago but have struggled to find the field this season.
Blanton originally signed with the Rams as an undrafted free agent out of Missouri in 2019. After scoring his first touchdown in the playoffs last year and starting the Super Bowl with Tyler Higbee out due to injury, Blanton found himself on the outside looking in of this year’s roster after being waived at the end of training camp.
After short stints with the Washington Commanders and Kansas City Chiefs, Blanton returned to L.A. a few weeks ago to help fill the void with a number of players out due to injury. With Brycen Hopkins returning from suspension though, the Rams now waive Blanton again to open up a roster spot.
Burgess was a third-round draft pick by the Rams in 2020 out of Utah. He had a lot of potential but has been surpassed by other defensive backs in the rotation, playing just a handful of snaps this season and recording 11 total tackles in seven games.
Both Blanton and Burgess will now hit waivers where they can be claimed by any team. If they go unclaimed then perhaps the Rams will have a chance to keep them on the practice squad moving forward.
Either way though, Sean McVay said after the Rams’ rough Week 9 loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers that changes would be coming and this seems to just be the start.
