The Los Angeles Rams waived 10 players and released two others ahead of the deadline to finalize 53-man rosters by Tuesday at 1 p.m. PT.
Among those waived were quarterback Dresser Winn, running back SaRodorick Thompson, wide receiver J.J. Laap, offensive linemen Matt Kaskey, Blake Larson, Alec Lindstrom and Grant Miller, defensive back Cameron McCutcheon, and linebackers Olakunle Fatukasi and Ochaun Mathis.
The Rams also released veteran running back Boston Scott and defensive end Carlos Watkins.
The biggest name from this list is Scott, who signed a one-year contract with the Rams during the offseason. He competed for one of the backup running back jobs behind Kyren Williams but lost out to Blake Corum, Ronnie Rivers and Zach Evans. It’s possible that Evans will eventually be cut too, however.
Watkins is another veteran who signed with the Rams earlier this month. He was brought in to provide some depth at defensive end but fell behind several players since arriving.
It is possible that the Rams will look to bring back some of the aforementioned names to their practice squad, which they can begin assembling on Aug. 28.
In order for a player to be added to a practice squad, he must first clear waivers. A team can carry as many as 17 players on their practice squad if at least one of them qualifies as an international player.
After their latest round of cuts, the Rams’ active roster is at 79 players. The team still has a long way to go to get to 53, which means they will be plenty active over the next 24 hours.
One of the team’s expected moves will be placing tight end Tyler Higbee on the physically unable to perform (PUP) list. He remains sidelined by a torn ACL and MCL but will be eligible to return after Week 4.
The Rams can place as many as two players on the PUP list before finalizing their 53-man roster and still designate them to return during the 2024 season.
Rams’ Sean McVay discusses Alaric Jackson’s suspension
The Rams will be without starting left guard Alaric Jackson for the first two games of the season after he was suspended for violating the league’s personal conduct policy.
Head coach Sean McVay McVay didn’t reveal any more details about the suspension but said the team would welcome him back in Week 3.
The Rams will likely turn to Joe Noteboom at left tackle in Jackson’s absence. Jackson will be eligible to return for the team’s home opener against the San Francisco 49ers.
