Rams Vs. Raiders Preview: Looking To Bounce Back In Second Preseason Game

The Los Angeles Rams’ first preseason game didn’t go according to plan as they lost to the Los Angeles Chargers, but they get a chance to bounce back when they host the Las Vegas Raiders.

The Rams got a close look at the Raiders as the two teams held joint practices this past week. Things are already tense as Cam Akers and Maxx Crosby got into a fist fight that resulted in both players being tossed from practice, adding a little more intrigue to their upcoming matchup.

Unlike Los Angeles, Las Vegas got off to a positive start to their preseason slate as they blew out the San Francisco 49ers. The Raiders looked great on both ends of the field and thus will make a tough challenge for the Rams, who are looking to find some chemistry in each phase of the field.

Rams Offense vs. Raiders Defense

Brett Rypien largely struggled in his start against the Chargers, so Sean McVay could opt to go with Stetson Bennett this time around. Bennett looked a little shaky at first but managed to catch a rhythm as the game wore on.

The offensive line is clearly a work in progress and could have trouble holding up against the Raiders who were able to wreak havoc against the 49ers. The interior is a particular point of interest as Logan Bruss and Steve Avila get useful live reps.

The running game could also use a jolt of energy. Zach Evans got the most carries with eight last week, though Ronnie Rivers was more efficient with his touches.

Rams Defense vs. Raiders Offense

On the other side, Aidan O’Connell looked great in his NFL debut as he has a good understanding of where to place the ball and keep the chains moving. Los Angeles’ defense had a couple of moments, but couldn’t seem to string together stops on third down.

Some of the youngsters in the secondary flashed moments, but will need to step up in passing situations. The biggest focus for Raheem Morris, though, has to be the defensive line that repeatedly got crushed against the Chargers.

Keys to Victory

1. Shore up the run defense

The Rams gave up 214 rushing yards against the Chargers, a dismal number even for preseason. Zamir White is slated to start for Las Vegas and is coming off a solid game where he recorded 49 yards and one touchdown, so slowing him down off the bat will be important.

2. Limit explosive plays

The Chargers were able to generate explosive plays both in the air and on the ground, so the Rams need to make sure they’re more disciplined on third downs.
