Los Angeles Rams head coach Sean McVay has been an NFL lifer since he was born as his grandfather John McVay is one of the most revered football executives in league history.

The elder McVay was a former head coach of the New York Giants but is widely remembered for his time as an executive with the San Francisco 49ers. During his time with the 49ers, John helped build them into a dynasty where they won five Super Bowls in a 14-year span.

It was a shock to the NFL world when San Francisco announced that John had passed away at the age of 91. During Sean’s post-practice media availability on Wednesday, he talked about his grandfather and what he hopes to do moving forward, via the Rams’ official Twitter:

It was an emotional moment for Sean talking about his grandfather and it’s clear when listening that John had a lot of influence on the Rams head coach growing up. From a leadership and personality standpoint, Sean learned early on how to thrive in an NFL organization and Los Angeles has been better off for it.

John joined the 49ers in 1979 and during the next 17 years he held various titles within the organization including general manager until leaving. He eventually returned in 1999 where he served as director of football of operations until 2003.

For his role in the San Francisco dynasty, John was inducted into the 49ers Hall of Fame in 2013 and the team named their draft room the “John McVay Draft Room” in 2016.
