The Los Angeles Rams are set to debut quarterback John Wolford under center for the 2020 NFL season finale against the Arizona Cardinals this Sunday in place of the injured Jared Goff.

Although the Rams are optimistic that Goff will be back in time for the playoffs, they will rely on Wolford to help them seal the deal by clinching a playoff spot with a win over the Cardinals. While he has yet to take a snap in the NFL, there is good reason for fans to be optimistic.

Before joining the Rams, Wolford lit up the Alliance of American Football as a member of the Arizona Hotshots. He will be looking to provide the same spark this time around in his first career start.

Here is a look at some of Wolford’s best moments from the AAF, via Youtube:

Wolford also got some time during the Rams’ scrimmage at SoFi Stadium before the season and Sean McVay couldn’t help but be impressed with some of the plays he made:

Wolford started his career with the New York Jets as an undrafted free agent out of Wake Forest prior to the 2018 campaign. Once his brief stint came to an end in New York, he joined the Hotshots and started to make waves of his own.

Wolford threw for 1,617 yards and a league-high 14 touchdowns, with seven interceptions in eight games. He also flashed some mobility with 160 rushing yards and a touchdown to go along with it.

Los Angeles did not make much effort to secure a surplus of depth behind Goff heading into the 2020 campaign. This is indicative of the confidence they had not only in Goff as the starter, but Wolford as the backup.

It is no secret that the offense has been the biggest issue plaguing the Rams this season and it is due in large part to Goff’s underwhelming play under center. A strong performance from Wolford would undoubtedly raise further questions regarding the team’s plans for the quarterback position.

For now, McVay is focused on locking in a Wild Card spot with a win over Arizona.
