The historical significance of the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum is undeniable. Not only was it center stage for two Olympics, but of course has been home to some of the most electric football teams in the history of the sport.

Now, however, professional football will once again leave the Coliseum as the Los Angeles Rams move on to their new stadium at Hollywood Park. SoFi Stadium is nearly completed and promises to be much more than any stadium before it.

Filled with one of a kind amenities, there will be one feature that stands out above the rest. SoFi Stadium will hold a 120-yard, 2-million pound, double-sided round display. While that is quite a mouthful, there is no doubt that it will be some of the most impressive technology in any NFL stadium. According to SoFi Stadium’s chief technology officer Skarpi Hedinsson, this is the first Oculus video board of its kind, via Stu Jackson of therams.com:

“Nobody has ever created content for a double-circular board like this,” Hedinsson said. “So the team has been in the lab for a long time, using our VR technology to understand how best to present content and how do we make sure that all the seating sections are in play as we put our images and our replay frames on the board.”

While SoFi stadium should have plenty of good views directly to the action on the field, this board should ensure that fans in attendance will see everything going on. While of course the board will be showcasing Rams’ replays, it appears that it can do much more.

Each individual display that makes up the screen can be programmed to have different content displayed on it. This has allowed the Rams creative team to come up with a number of animations to display in real-time along with other footage or stats.

When it comes down to it, the games are for the fans and Hedinsson is dedicated to making the best fan experience he can:

“We’re trying to create a better guest experience, a better fan experience,” Hedinsson said. “How do we create content? How do we give our guests the best possible show when they come to Hollywood Park? And I think that was the primary driver. But I think having a center home board, it opens up a lot of other possibilities in the building.”

While the stadium is not quite finished, it is hard to contain the excitement. Hopefully, the Rams will provide plenty of highlights for their new jumbotron when they move into their new home in 2020.
