Rams Selling Limited Number Of Kenny Washington Jerseys On Feb. 16

To commemorate his legacy during Black History Month, the Los Angeles Rams announced that a limited number of Kenny Washington jerseys will be available for purchase on Friday, Feb. 16.

The jersey going on sale has long sleeves, which was the style worn by the Rams from 1946-1948. It also has a patch with Washington’s signature on it.

Washington’s impact on football is immeasurable as he became the first African-American player in the modern era to sign a contract in the NFL. He inked a three-year deal with the Rams in 1946 and would play out the entire contract.

Washington was primarily a running back but additionally saw some time as a defensive back. He enjoyed his best season in 1947 when he rushed for a career-high 444 yards and scored five touchdowns in 11 games (two starts).

In parts of three seasons with the Rams, Washington ran for 859 yards on 140 carries and found the end zone eight times. He also caught 15 passes for 227 yards and scored one additional touchdown.

Washington retired as a player after the 1948 season due to a significant knee injury.

Prior to his career with the Rams, Washington played collegiately at UCLA, where he starred in both football and baseball. The Los Angeles native became the first Bruin to lead the nation in total offense en route to 1939 All-American honors, and later had his No. 13 retired.
