The 2016-17 NFL season may be in the books for the Los Angeles Rams, but the team will look to act quickly when it comes to hiring their next head coach. The Rams were one of six teams that fired their head coach and are now all in search for a hiring that will move their franchises in the right direction starting next year.
While the opening in Los Angeles may be one of the most attractive in the market this offseason that will attract a lot of big names, it appears the Rams will at least give interim head coach John Fassel an interview on NFL’s Black Monday, according to Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk:
Per a source with knowledge of the situation, interim coach John Fassel will be interviewed on Monday.
Fassel has been the team’s Special Teams Coordinator since 2012, but was promoted on an interim basis when Jeff Fisher was relieved of his head coaching duties after Week 14. However, with no prior head coaching experience in the NFL besides the three games to end this season, it is unlikely Fassel is even strongly considered to remove the interim tag and remain head coach next season.
According to Florio, what happens after Fassel gets interviewed depends on coaching availability and time slots for the considered candidates that are in the playoffs:
The process thereafter will depend in large part on who is available to be interviewed and when, based on which candidates work for teams that are still playing.
Some of the notable names linked to the Rams head coaching job are New Orleans Saints head coach Sean Payton and offensive coordinators Kyle Shanahan and Josh McDaniels.
Along with some top names in the league, Stanford head coach David Shaw and ESPN analyst Jon Gruden are potential candidates for the head coaching position.
