With the 2016-17 NFL season nearing its unceremonious end, the Los Angeles Rams have seemingly already begun the search for their next head coach. While big names like Jon Gruden and Jim Harbaugh have come to the forefront, there just may be another more likely candidate for the Rams after firing head coach Jeff Fisher following five seasons.
According to Mike Freeman of Bleacher Report, the Rams are reportedly focusing in on New England Patriots offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach Josh McDaniels:
“The Rams are focusing on him, I’m told, because he’s more realistic, and he’s a big enough name to sell in L.A. Plus, he can fix any potential Goff issues, the Rams think.”
However, Freeman adds McDaniels is in no hurry to become a head coach again:
“But, I’m told, McDaniels is in no hurry to become a head coach again. So keep that in mind as you hear his name repeatedly after the season. He is a patient guy and will wait for the perfect opportunity.”
McDaniels has served as offensive coordinator under head coach Bill Belichick for the better part of the Patriots dynasty. Over the last decade, it has resulted in four Super Bowls, which includes grooming a young quarterback in Tom Brady. His experience with one of the greatest quarterbacks of all time would be invaluable to a prospect like Jared Goff. It is no secret Goff, along with the rest of the offense, have put on one of the worst offensive showcases in recent history this season.
Furthermore, McDaniels already has ties with the Rams franchise after serving as offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach under the Steve Spagnuolo regime in 2011. Although it should be noted that McDaniels’ last go-round as head coach of the Denver Broncos lasted only one season, this opportunity with Los Angeles could see him locked up for the foreseeable future.
