The talent drain from head coach Sean McVay’s staff looks like it might finally starting to seep into the organization’s success.
McVay has seen quality coordinators leave for positions around the league, most notably his previous offensive coordinators who have earned head coaching gigs of their own. Matt LaFleur and Kevin O’Connell each left after a year with the Rams for the Green Bay Packers and Minnesota Vikings, respectively, forcing McVay to replace them.
Entering the 2022 season, McVay filled his vacant OC spot with Liam Coen who previously spent time in Los Angeles as an assistant wide receivers coach. However, it looks like he will be the latest McVay offensive coordinator to depart as he is reportedly heading back to the University of Kentucky to fulfill the same role, via Chris Mortensen of ESPN:

This report comes as a surprise considering Coen sounded excited to be reunited with McVay. Perhaps the opportunity to call plays again is what drew him back to his old job, but whatever the reason, McVay will need to once again replace the offensive coordinator position on his staff.
Coen enjoyed a successful year with Kentucky during the 2021 season as their offensive coordinator, helping the team go 10-3 after the 2020 season where they finished with a mediocre 5-6 record. Although he didn’t call plays with the Rams, he was still a key part of their offensive gameplan and now it’ll be interesting to see who McVay picks as his next running mate.
