There are a lot of different routes the Los Angeles Rams could go in the upcoming 2024 NFL Draft. It hasn’t been often that the franchise has had a first round pick recently so general manager Les Snead and the Rams front office will surely want to make the best out of it.
An area such as defensive line or secondary would make a lot of sense, but one area that could potentially use a boost that hasn’t been discussed as much is at quarterback. Matthew Stafford is closer to the end of his career than the beginning while Jimmy Garoppolo is only on a one-year deal. The team also has Stetson Bennett whom they drafted last year, but he is no certainty either.
There are a number of intriguing quarterback prospects in the upcoming draft and the Rams, sitting with the 19th overall pick, could have the opportunity to select one of them. And according to Mike Giardi of the Boston Sports Journal, they are one of the teams who have been eyeing quarterbacks:
As for McCarthy, he helped himself more by not being here than he probably would have had he shown up. The Michigan National Championship-winning quarterback passed on the chance to show out in Mobile and, with the other two big names scuffling, may have solidified a spot at the top of tier 2, QB-wise. Where will that land him? Atlanta (#8), Minnesota (11), Las Vegas (13), Seattle (16), LA Rams (19), Pittsburgh (20), and Tampa Bay (26) have all been sniffing around signal callers in this draft, in addition to the top 3 teams.
It makes a lot of sense that the Rams are doing their due diligence on the quarterbacks in this draft as even outside of the top three prospects, there are others who will be available later who could be starters in the NFL.
Michigan’s JJ McCarthy, Washington’s Michael Penix Jr. and Oregon’s Bo Nix are extremely talented and made big impacts at the collegiate level. Even if the Rams don’t want to use their first-round pick on a quarterback, they could look to take one in the second, possibly even moving up to do so.
Nothing should be ruled out and the Rams are wise to consider all options. If they feel there is a potential long-term answer at quarterback, the franchise will surely take a long look at making that move.
Rams were outbid by Seahawks for Sam Howell
One reason why the Rams could still be in the market for a quarterback now is because they were unable to get one they wanted via trade. The team was reportedly interested in acquiring former Washington Commanders quarterback Sam Howell, but were outbid by their division rival Seattle Seahawks who gave up a third and fifth-round pick to bring Howell in.
At just 23 years old and having had some success in the NFL already, Howell would’ve made a lot of sense for the Rams to develop under Sean McVay, but it just wasn’t in the cards.
