As has been a common occurrence since arriving in Los Angeles, head coach Sean McVay will need to spend time in the offseason reshaping his coaching staff.

The Los Angeles Rams have already lost a couple of key personnel members in Kevin O’Connell and Ejiro Evero, and some others like assistant special teams coach Dwayne Stukes. For the vacant offensive coordinator position, it seems McVay is eyeing Kentucky offensive coordinator Liam Coen to fill O’Connell’s role.

As names continue to circulate in the rumor mill, it appears that the Rams have a person to replace Stukes because according to Pete Thamel of ESPN, they will hire Jeremy Springer from Marshall as their new assistant special teams coach:

Springer spent the 2021 season as Marshall’s special teams coordinator but now foregoes an opportunity with Ole Miss to come join McVay in Los Angeles. Prior to his stint at Marshall, Springer spent three seasons at Arizona working with Kevin Sumlin.

While the Rams offense and defense ranked near the top of the league, special teams was by far and away its weakest phase. Outside of Matt Gay and the field goal unit, Los Angeles struggled with punt and kickoff returns and often times shuffled through returners.

In Super Bowl LVI, special teams had an unfortunate gaffe when Johnny Hekker could not set the ball in time on an extra point attempt that could have proved costly. Hopefully Springer alongside special teams coordinator Joe DeCamillis can improve the unit and make it a strength for Los Angeles in the 2022 season.
