After taking quarterback Jared Goff with the first overall pick in the 2016 NFL Draft, there was much speculation regarding when the rookie would be able to play. Now after four straight losses, the pressure to replace quarterback Case Keenum with Goff has increased.
Despite Rams fans chanting for Goff against the Carolina Panthers, head coach Jeff Fisher confirmed Keenum will start against the New York Jets in Week 9. However, restless fans now have an idea of when they plan on inserting the rookie quarterback.
According to Ian Rapoport of NFL, they may have to wait until Los Angeles is out of playoff contention to see Goff under center:
“Barring some sort of epic collapse by Case Keenum, they are not going to make a switch until they fall out of playoff contention,” Rapoport said. “With the 2016 playoffs still a possibility, expect Keenum to be out there.”
While Keenum has not been the sole reason for the team’s current woes, his performance this season has been lackluster nonetheless. Los Angeles currently ranks 30th in the NFL in total yards per game.
Meanwhile, Keenum has thrown for just over 2,000 yards and currently owns a 9:11 touchdown-to-interception ratio. Luckily, he has a chance to improve those numbers with favorable matchups against some of the league’s most generous defense in the coming weeks.
