Rams Rumors: Cowboys Hiring Skip Peete As Running Backs Coach

After a disappointing 9-7 season in which they missed the postseason a year after making the Super Bowl, the Los Angeles Rams have made some wholesale changes to their coaching staff this offseason.

Among them was the firing of running backs coach Skip Peete, who held the positions with the Rams for the last four seasons. Sean McVay retained him from Jeff Fisher‘s staff when he took over prior to the 2017 season.

Peete was instrumental in the development of Todd Gurley, helping him become an All-Pro running back over the course of his career. Gurley had a down season in 2019 though, which may have played a role in Peete being let go.

It appears it did not take long for Peete to find a new job as according to Lindsey Thiry of ESPN, he will be joining Mike McCarthy’s staff on the Dallas Cowboys:

The Dallas Cowboys will hire Skip Peete as running backs coach, per source.

This is a reunion for Peete and the Cowboys as he coached there for 2007-12. Peete is not the only former Rams coach to be heading to Dallas as special teams coordinator John Fassel will be joining him. Fassel was one of the more popular coaches on L.A.’s staff, but his contract came to an end and McVay allowed him to pursue the opportunity with the Cowboys.

Another change for the Rams came on the defensive side of the ball after they let go of defensive coordinator Wade Phillips. McVay has since hired a relatively unknown name in Brandon Staley to replace him, while also adding an offensive coordinator in Kevin O’Connell to the mix.

McVay has not yet found replacements for both Peete and Fassel, so those are likely the next two things on his to-do list before the focus turns to free agency and the draft.
