The Los Angeles Rams announced the hiring of Liam Coen as their new offensive coordinator, replacing Kevin O’Connell, who was named head coach of the Minnesota Vikings last month.
Coen returns to the Rams after spending the 2021 season as the University of Kentucky’s offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach. Under his tutelage, the Wildcats ranked fifth in scoring offense (32.3 points per game) and eighth in total offense (425.2 yards per game) in the SEC last year.
Prior to joining the college ranks, Coen spent three seasons with the Rams, serving as the assistant wide receivers coach in 2018-19 and then as the assistant quarterback coach in 2020.
Coen’s first season as L.A.’s assistant wide receivers coach was successful as the team ranked No. 3 in scoring offense behind Robert Woods (1,219) and Brandin Cooks (1,204) crossing the century mark in receiving yards.
The Rams’ receiving unit picked up where they left off in 2019 as Cooper Kupp (1,161) and Woods (1,134) both enjoyed Pro Bowl-caliber seasons. It marked a second consecutive season L.A. produced a pair of 1,000-yard receivers, which was a feat the franchise had not been accomplished since 2001-02.
Then in the following season, Coen helped Jared Goff throw for nearly 4,000 yards and 20 touchdowns. Goff also cut back on his interceptions from the previous season and posted a higher quarterback rating.
Before his hiring was made official, Coen expressed excitement for the opportunity to work under head coach Sean McVay again and noted the Rams were the only team he would consider leaving Kentucky for.
Coen is one of several newcomers on a Rams coaching staff that has undergone several changes since Super Bowl LVI. Jake Peetz and Greg Olson will also reportedly join McVay’s offensive staff, while Jeremy Springer is set to be named the team’s new assistant special teams coach.
