Now that the Los Angeles Rams have officially signed their top coaches on both sides of the ball in Sean McVay and Wade Phillips, the time has come for the two to get acquainted both with each other and their new city. When the Rams hired McVay, the young head coach was vocal about his first choice for defensive coordinator and was eager to bring him in.
According to Greg Beachem of Associated Press, that eagerness to get to work was mutual with Phillips after hearing great things about McVay from his son, Wes:
“Wes just talked great things about him all the time,” Phillips said. “And then I met him, and he was very impressive. And then when he started the process, he asked me if I would consider coming with him if he got a head coaching job. I said, ‘Well, I don’t have a contract, so sure.'”
Phillips’ son served as tight ends coach under McVay in Washington when the now-Rams head coach had just been named offensive coordinator back in 2014. While there is hardly anything the elder Phillips has not come across in his nearly 50 years in the NFL, the prospect of coming to a team whose foundation is built on the defense like the Rams provides a more positive outlook for him.
Phillips is well known for running a 3-4 scheme, but he has not had the fortune of tinkering with a defensive line as talented and deep as the one here in Los Angeles. For Mcvay, he is optimistic Phillips can manage to get the most out of this talented defensive group.
