Los Angeles Rams tight end Tyler Higbee was named one of the team captains for the 2023 season alongside Matthew Stafford, Cooper Kupp, Rob Havenstein, Aaron Donald, Jordan Fuller, Ernest Jones and Ben Skowronek. Higbee was one of three first-time captains next to Jones and Skowronek.
Higbee is in his eighth season, all with the Rams, making him one of the longest-tenured players on a relatively young and inexperienced team. He has been the starting tight end for the last seven seasons and has been an integral part of the franchise’s turnaround and eventual Super Bowl championship in 2021.
An honor like this was a long-time coming for a player like Higbee. And yet, he was still in awe of the decision by the Rams. He spoke about what the nod meant to him and what he compares it to in an interview with Rams broadcaster J.B. Long:
“I was telling my mom, that’s up there with some of my biggest football accomplishments. Up there with the Super Bowl, and Tyler Higbee bobblehead that I got one time.”
Higbee then turned his focus to the excitement of when he received bobblehead honors, saying that it reminded him of going to sporting events as a child.
“Ever since you’re a little kid, I remember going to a hockey game when I was younger and it was a bobblehead night and they were passing out a bobblehead of someone – couldn’t even tell you who it was – and I was just like, ‘This dude’s got a bobblehead, that’s so cool,’” he said. “It reminds me that this is still like a kid’s game sometimes.”
Higbee certainly lets his sense of humor shine by comparing the Super Bowl championship and being named a team captain to having a bobblehead. But for the Rams tight end, all of those moments are signals that he has climbed the mountain and reached several peaks of his profession.
Now, as team captain, he can help lead a Rams offense that has impressed in the early part of the season to see if they can surprise everyone by sneaking into the postseason.
Higbee lands extension
The Rams tight end was also recently rewarded for his efforts in the form of a two-year contract extension that will keep him in L.A. through the 2025 NFL season.
According to Ian Rapoport of NFL Network, Higbee’s new deal with the Rams is worth up to $30.5 million with $17 million guaranteed.
