After finishing the 2017 NFL season with an 11-5 record, the Los Angeles Rams clinched the NFC West title and the No. 3 overall seed heading into the 2017 NFL Playoffs. The Rams have thrived under Sean McVay and Wade Phillips as they are one of the most balanced rosters in the NFL.
Todd Gurley has been the primary beneficiary of McVay’s offensive scheme and turned himself into a legitimate MVP candidate. According to Myles Simmons of Rams, Gurley is relishing his role as a pass-catcher:
Obviously the more balls you get, just keep getting thrown at you, the more you’re going to get comfortable with it. Any ball that comes my way now, I feel like I can catch,” Gurley said. “You know, if you don’t catch the ball the obviously you don’t know how good of a catcher you can be. But coach McVay and just the whole offense this year defiantly helped me to bring that to my game this year.”
Gurley set several career-highs during the 2017 NFL campaign as he scored 19 total touchdowns, with six of them being receiving touchdowns. His ability to get out into the open field and catch passes made it difficult for opposing defenses to cover the rest of the team’s options, allowing Los Angeles to score often.
The Rams have put themselves in a position to make a deep postseason run given their talent on both sides of the field. They draw the Atlanta Falcons in the Wild Card round.
