Los Angeles Rams running back Todd Gurley has done a marvelous job of carrying the torch of franchise greats who have played the position. However, former running back Steven Jackson is not ready to give him or any other legendary back the nod over himself.
There is no question that the Rams boast an impressive history of players at that position. Regardless, Jackson feels his body of work with the team gives him the nod over the others, according to Gary Klein of the Los Angeles Times:
“Sometimes, I talk to current fans here [in Los Angeles] and there’s an argument of who’s the greatest running back to be a Ram,” Jackson said. “I think it’s me.
“Look at the record book. Everybody has their pick.”
Jackson’s comments may seem a bit bold compared to the likes of Hall of Famers such as Dickerson and Faulk. However, there is plenty of truth to his statement.
He was taken with the 24th overall pick in the 2004 NFL Draft as the heir apparent to Faulk. It did not take long for him to establish himself as a bonafide workhorse back and arguably the most formidable power back of his generation.
Jackson ended his tenure with the Rams as the franchise leader in rushing attempts (2,396) and yards (10,138). Not to mention three Pro Bowls and two All-Pro selections. On top of having the numbers, he also had the longevity over other running backs after nine seasons with the team. Furthermore, he should be praised for being the lone bright spot in perhaps the most disastrous period in team history. That said, Jackson has made a solid case for himself.
However, it is a title that he may not be able to hold onto for very long. The emergence of Gurley as a legitimate MVP threat year in and year out may very well soon cause Jackson to change his mind.
