Los Angeles Rams quarterback Jared Goff was undoubtedly one of the most improved players in the 2017 NFL season. Unfortunately, the Rams suffered key losses with the departure of offensive coordinator Matt LaFleur and quarterbacks coach Greg Olson to other teams due to the success on offense Los Angeles enjoyed last year.
As a result, head coach Sean McVay is going to have to be more involved in helping Goff continue to develop. However, according to ESPN’s Alden Gonzalez, he is optimistic about their replacements in tight ends coach Shane Waldron and quarterbacks coach Zac Taylor:
“It’s a fine line because you want to be able to give Shane and Zac their time,” McVay said of being more hands-on with Goff. “You don’t want to be overbearing. The biggest thing is our ability to communicate and be on the same page. There will be more opportunities than maybe there were last year. I think that’s just with any experience as you get more comfortable with your rhythm.”
Among the notable headlines going into the 2018 NFL season is that the Rams will be without an official offensive coordinator. Waldron will serve as the passing-game coordinator while offensive line coach Aaron Kromer will also double as running-game coordinator.
The decision should not be too drastic since McVay he has been calling plays in the first place. It is one of the reasons why LaFleur’s role with the Tennessee Titans was essentially a promotion. Fortunately, McVay will have plenty of more time to work firsthand with Goff than he did last offseason amidst all the changes that had been made from the new coaching staff to player personnel.
