The Los Angeles Rams made a splash by dealing for All-Pro cornerback Marcus Peters. Unfortunately, his signing had seemingly meant the end of cornerback Trumaine Johnson’s stint with the team.

However, he still has one key believer in head coach Sean McVay. According to Rams Insider Myles Simmons, McVay says he would like to have Johnson stick around and help take the Rams to the next level:

“We want Trumaine back. We want to try to see if that can work,” McVay told assembled reporters at the NFL Combine, noting that Johnson’s situation is independent of any other transaction Los Angeles may or may not make.

McVay’s comments may come as a bit of a surprise considering how hesitant the front office has been about reaching a long-term contract. However, from a personnel standpoint, it certainly makes sense.Retaining Johnson would add some much-needed depth to the Rams secondary, especially with cornerback Kayvon Webster still nursing an Achilles injury.

Although Peters will undoubtedly take over as the team’s top corner, it is still likely that Johnson would start opposite of the two-time All-Pro. However, the veteran is expected to pose a strong market in an offseason that lacks corners. Needless to say, the Rams currently have more pressing issues at hand with the situations surrounding star defensive tackle Aaron Donald, wide receiver Sammy Watkins, and safety Lamarcus Joyner.
