Los Angeles Rams head coach Sean McVay has staked his claim as one of the best in the business as his team is always in the playoff hunt.
The 2025 season is a great opportunity for the Rams to take the next step as they’ve got the young talent, depth and coaching to make another run at a Super Bowl. McVay’s been one of the best at adapting his schemes on the fly, adjusting his playcalling and personnel usage depending on the roster.
However, the offense should reach elite levels again now that Matthew Stafford and the offensive line are back in place for another year together. The team also added Davante Adams and Terrance Ferguson to an offensive core that already features Puka Nacua, Kyren Williams and Stafford.
Ahead of the regular season, McVay was voted as the best offensive play caller in the NFL in a survey of coaches and executives, via Jeff Howe of The Athletic:
With the NFL’s recent swing toward young, brilliant offensive minds, it was time to add this question to the rotation. The results were fairly predictable with McVay and Shanahan at the top, but it was interesting to get a feel for the way the league views many of their understudies.
The poll was conducted with 31 participants and the voting for best offensive play caller allowed for three votes from each voter. McVay was the lead vote getter with 25 votes, while San Francisco 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan finished in second with 18. Rounding out the top three was new Chicago Bears head coach Ben Johnson, who earned his reputation as one of the league’s best play callers during his tenure with the Detroit Lions.
Interestingly enough, several of McVay’s former assistants landed on the list. Minnesota Vikings head coach Kevin O’Connell received the most votes with eight, while new Jacksonville Jaguars head coach Liam Coen received four votes. Green Bay Packers head coach Matt LaFleur found himself near the bottom of the list with two votes.
Teams around the league have looked to replicate the Rams’ success by hiring former McVay assistants and for good reason considering how much they’ve managed to learn and take away from his operation. McVay’s combination of knowledge, experience and youth make him the perfect leader for Los Angeles today and moving forward.
Kyren Williams credits Sean McVay for always believing in him
Not only does Sean McVay know X’s and O’s, but he’s also a proven people leader as well. For example, Kyren Williams credited McVay for always believing in him, leading to his extension with the Rams.
