There were a number of issues that factored into the Los Angeles Rams loss to the Chicago Bears in Week 14. However, head coach Sean McVay insisted that the team’s problems began with himself.
The Rams’ offense had failed to get anything going on offense all day. According to Myles Simmons of Rams, McVay feels he should shoulder the blame for their loss:
“Consistently, over and over, I put our players in bad spots. … This loss is on me. I didn’t do nearly enough for our football team today.”
McVay’s comments should come as no surprise since he has made a habit of taking the blame for all of the Rams’ shortcomings in the 2018 NFL season. He tends to hold himself accountable even when Los Angeles wins in spectacular fashion. It is safe to assume he will continue to do so until they are able to accomplish their ultimate goals.
Regardless, there is still certainly plenty of truth to them. The game plan for this week’s matchup against the formidable Bears defense was questionable, to say the least. However, it should still be noted that he did not have much help from his players when it came to execution.
The Rams’ offensive line was flat-out dominated up front which resulted in an abysmal outing for the entire offense. Jared Goff endured his worst performance of the 2018 campaign after completing just 20-of-44 passes for 180 yards and four interceptions. Meanwhile, the ground game was virtually non-existent as they failed to get Todd Gurley in any kind of rhythm. He finished with 28 yards on 11 carries.
The Rams have now lost home-field advantage throughout the playoffs, for now. Fortunately, they will have a chance to bounce back with favorable matchups over the final three games.
