The Los Angeles Rams defense went through a makeover during the offseason as they have a new defensive coordinator in Chris Shula and several new young pieces to build the unit around.

Jared Verse and Braden Fiske are expected to help fill the void Aaron Donald left behind, though the Rams also drafted Brennan Jackson and Tyler Davis to aid the effort. Meanwhile, Ernest Jones, Byron Young and Kobie Turner will lead the charge despite their youth.

Even the secondary will look vastly different as Los Angeles managed to sign former Buffalo Bills All-Pro Tre’Davious White. The Rams signed White to a one-year, $10 million deal despite him still recovering from a torn Achilles.

While it remains to be seen if White will be ready for Week 1, head coach Sean McVay provided a positive update on him rehab.

“You know, he’s making good progress,” McVay recently said. “He was able to partake in the walkthrough.

“It’s obviously a significant injury that he’s overcome. He’s gotten a lot of good stuff done on the side. You could see he’s really locked in and engaged in the meeting setting. As far as what his actual process will be in training camp, we’ll see where he’s at. He does such a great job, understands his body, and so I don’t think we want to pigeonhole ourselves into one approach. Alright, how’s he feeling? What does it look like relative to when (Head Team Physician) Neil ElAttrache checks up on him and what’s going to be the best thing for him, not only for hopefully being ready to go for the opener, but for the totality of the season.”

White has unfortunately suffered multiple long-term leg injuries since coming into the league, which puts a bit of a damper on his signing with the Rams. However, there were reportedly several teams trying to sign him in free agency which could be a good sign that he is on track to play early on in 2024.

At his best, White is a true shutdown corner who can lock up one side of the field and if he’s available to return close to form then the Rams will have gotten a bargain.

Tre’Davious White explains why Rams were a good fit for him in free agency

Despite his injury history, Tre’Davious White’s upside is worth the gamble and Los Angeles has a clear path for him to rehab his value. After signing with the Rams, he explained why he decided to go with them over his other options.
