The Los Angeles Rams trimmed their roster down from 90 to 53 as they announced a series of cuts on Friday and Saturday, letting go of a lot of quality players.
However, the difficult decisions for head coach Sean McVay and his staff are far from over. The Rams can only have 46 players suit up for each game, and they can also keep 10 players that they cut on the practice squad.
According to Stu Jackson of TheRams.com, McVay acknowledges the tough decisions he has to make, but appreciates the players making it difficult:
“A lot of tough decisions that we have to make for our football team, whether it’s deciding on our 53, (then) of those 53, the 46 that will be up for gameday, and then figuring out the practice squad,” McVay said after L.A.’s 22-10 preseason finale win at Houston Thursday night. “But it’s a credit to those guys for making our decisions tough in the next couple of days.”
The second round of cuts featured many players on the defensive side of the ball, an area McVay thought would be tough to decide. Those included safety Steven Parker and cornerback Kevin Peterson, both of whom had great preseasons for the Rams.
Interestingly, the Rams did not keep much depth at the linebacker position. They might find themselves needing more depth due to an injury to Micah Kiser, who injured his chest and was placed on the season-ending IR.
Also of note, only one of the Rams eight draft picks were cut. Linebacker Dakota Allen, the Rams final selection in the 2019 NFL Draft, did not make the team. He was featured on the Netflix documentary series ‘Last Chance U’ and was the first player to be drafted by an NFL team.
The Rams practice squad will likely be composed of rookies, and Allen could have an opportunity to be there if he clears waivers. Who those players are going to be will likely trickle out soon.
