Los Angeles Rams head coach Sean McVay has plenty of regrets regarding their performance against the New England Patriots in Super Bowl LIII, but his biggest one seems to be his lack of a contingency plan.
The Rams had boasted one of the most high-powered offenses in the league going into the game. Unfortunately, they were relegated to a shell of their former selves by the Patriots’ defense en route to a 13-3 loss.
McVay has deservedly received plenty of criticism for his lackluster game plan against New England. It appears even the young head coach feels he is deserving of the blame for their poor performance.
McVay said during an appearance on Pro Football Talk that he admittedly regrets not having a better backup plan:
“What I would do differently is that you’re putting your players in a position the way you practice and prepare to have an ownership for some of the things we activated,” he said.
McVay’s comments are certainly understandable. The Rams knew full well that head coach Bill Belichick was going to stack the box in an effort to force Jared Goff to make plays.
At the same time, the Patriots were able to provide hounding pressure which did not leave Goff with much time to throw. As a result, New England was able to keep the offense out of their rhythm throughout the entire game.
It is safe to say that Wade Phillips and the defense upheld their end of the bargain by holding an efficient Patriots offense to just 13 points. Unfortunately, McVay has to live with the fact that his side of the ball did not do their jobs.
Of course, there is much for McVay to learn from after going against the most decorated coach in NFL history. It will be interesting to see how this experience changes his approach moving forward.
