Los Angeles Rams head coach Sean McVay may be considered one of the brightest, young minds in the NFL but Arizona Cardinals head coach Kliff Kingsbury found out just how good of a prankster he is as well.

It is no secret that McVay and Kingsbury are good friends and at one point nearly became peers during the 2018 NFL season. They have since had more time to settle into their new roles as NFC West rivals.

The two recently had dinner together along with Patrick Mahomes. McVay took that opportunity to play a little prank on Kingsbury.

According to Clarence Dennis of the team’s official website, McVay pretended that he had received a text from Roger Goodell:

“We have a mutual friend that I put his name in my phone as [NFL commissioner] Roger Goodell. I had this friend send me a text saying, ‘I can’t believe you’re at dinner with Kingsbury and Mahomes. You know better than this. This is tampering. You’re both losing picks.’

“I showed Kliff the text, and he saw a ghost. I said, ‘You better call [Cardinals general manager] Steve Keim right away.’ He said, ‘I thought I was going to lose the No. 1 overall pick.’

“We couldn’t let it go on too long, but it was pretty good. We got him good.”

It is easy to see why McVay was able to get a bit of a rise out of Kingsbury. The rookie head coach is still trying to find his footing in the NFL and the prospect of being charged with tampering and losing a draft pick would not have been an ideal start.

Regardless, it is encouraging to see that McVay has a playful side to him. After all, it was not that long ago he was in the same position as Kingsbury and was learning not to take everything too seriously at the time.

It will not be long before these two friends are competing for supremacy in their division. Perhaps Kingsbury will be looking for payback with an upset win next season.
