Despite his relatively green coaching resume, Los Angeles Rams head coach Sean McVay had already developed some strong relationships during his prior stints with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Washington Redskins. McVay’s Rams came up short in Week 2 versus the Redskins and now he moves on to face another former colleague in San Francisco 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan.
McVay and Shanahan spent four seasons together in Washington helping Shanahan’s father, Mike Shanahan, help run the offense. In fact, McVay even recalls the two hitting it off right away during his interview prior to the 2010 NFL season, according to Alden Gonzalez of ESPN:
“I remember it very well,” McVay said. “It was a comfortable rapport that we had right away because you’re talking about football and there were some similarities in terms of our background, both having worked with Jon Gruden as a quality-control coach. We were able to speak the same verbiage right away.”
Los Angeles had expressed plenty of interest in Shanahan during their hunt for a new head coach. However, it seems Mother Nature had other plans after a snowstorm forced the Rams representatives to keep on delaying the interview with Shanahan.
Los Angeles ultimately signed McVay, while Shanahan agreed to a deal with the rival 49ers. Needless to say, things may have worked out for the best for both teams.
