The Los Angeles Rams offense has had no problems putting up points in the 2018 NFL season. However, head coach Sean McVay has acknowledged their porous run defense.

Their nailbiter versus the Seattle Seahawks was further evidence of the Rams’ woes on defense. According to Cameron DaSilva of Rams Wire, McVay is confident that they will get things patched up:

“I wouldn’t say you’re concerned. I think we need to address some different things and there’s a reason why each one of those runs popped out,” McVay said Monday. “What we’re encouraged about as you watch it as a staff are they’re very fixable things. When you just look at whether it’s losing some gap integrity, playing around a block. Then, you’ve also got to give those guys some credit. But, there was the one third-down run that popped out where we were in a different front and those are things that are great for us as coaches to look at ourselves and say, ‘Alright, what can we do to potentially to avoid this in a situation where they’re checking to some of these runs based on a defensive structure.’ and you get a chance to learn from it.”

It is encouraging to see McVay take an optimistic approach to their current issues. It is clear that he is looking at their struggles as a glass-half-full situation. However, it remains to be seen whether or not they can actually get some improvement from their players up front.

The Rams defense has given up 106.8 rushing yards per game which puts them right around the league average. However, that number is hardly indicative of how bad they are against the run. Only three teams have given up more yards per run than Los Angeles. Fortunately, their ability to get ahead on the scoreboard often forces teams to abandon the run.

However, that may not be the case in Week 6 when they face the Denver Broncos. Denver boasts one of the most promising, young backfield duos in the league in Royce Freeman and Phillip Lindsay.
