When head coach Jeff Fisher was fired, John Fassel became the interim head coach of a struggling Los Angeles Rams team that ultimately went 4-12 for the 2016 NFL season. Owners and management were hoping for a more successful season after returning to Los Angeles, so hiring a head coach that could help the team succeed going forward was their main priority.

After entering the offseason with a wishlist of potential candidates, the Rams have found their new head coach in Washington Redskins offensive coordinator Sean McVay:

Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reports McVay signed a five-year deal, but terms have not been disclosed:

McVay, who is only 30 years old, makes for the perfect person to fill the head coaching vacancy in Los Angeles as he seems to have a knack for developing young quarterbacks, something Jared Goff will be sure to benefit from. Not only that, but McVay should be able to help the Rams in the scoring department after the team finished dead last this season in scoring per game.

The former offensive coordinator has already stated that his first choice for defensive coordinator would be Wade Phillips. Phillips’ resume in the league is the perfect complement to McVay’s youth and the two would make a great partnership in the City of Angels.

As the youngest head coach in league history, McVay will be tasked with leading the team’s youth movement. With Goff, Todd Gurley and Aaron Donald, he will have plenty to prove in Los Angeles. For now, however, there is optimism surrounding the Rams and hope for better days to come.
