The Los Angeles Rams picked up their fourth win in the last five games and now find themselves right in the thick of the NFC playoff race. Their 28-20 win over the Washington Commanders saw Sean McVay’s offense total 445 yards, led by 152 yards and a touchdown by running back Kyren Williams.
While it was an overall good night for Williams, there were some things that need to be corrected, most notably the fumbles. The Rams back lost two fumbles against Washington, though in fairness, this has not been an issue for him throughout this season.
Hopefully this was simply an anomaly that won’t carry on moving forward. Either way, McVay still has plenty of confidence in his running back.
“I got a lot of confidence in him. Those are very correctable things,” McVay said about the fumbles. “You could see he was getting a little loose even on the great run that he had earlier in the game, it’s kind of getting away from his body. You credit them for being able to force those. But he’s a great player. We wouldn’t be in a lot of these situations in a positive way if it wasn’t for him.
“I love the way that he finished the game out. It’s always about your response and so he’ll learn from it and he’s the type of guy that has the right football character, the right mindset and mentality to be able to use these things as learning ops push forward in a positive way. And he still made big time contributions to this game in a positive way.”
The first fumble came in the Washington red zone and ended a drive that should have netted the Rams some points while the second came just two possessions later. But as McVay noted, Williams responded well and continued to push throughout the rest of the game.
Williams also surpassed 1,000 scrimmage yards for the season, something that McVay credits to his work ethic. “I think it’s the way that he’s worked,” the Rams coach added. “This is a guy that puts in the work. He’s got that growth mindset that you guys have heard us talk about. Really happy for him and I just love the way that he continues to just be able to take steps in the right direction, keep being coachable, keep being accountable.
“He’s made a lot of plays. He’s made a huge difference. When he’s in the lineup and when he is not, it’s a very different theme for us. I could say that about a couple guys, but he has been a big spark plug in a positive way for us. I’m really happy for him. I want to just continue to see him make these strides, but happy for Kyren and all his success and it’s been earned.”
Williams has undoubtedly been one of the biggest success stories for the Rams this season and a big reason why they have surprised everyone by being a postseason contender. Williams worked hard to get this opportunity and he has made sure not to squander it in any way.
