Rams News: Sean McVay Hoping To Better Utilize Gerald Everett In 2020

The Los Angeles Rams’ offseason has not been ideal as the team decided to move on from two key pieces of the offense in Todd Gurley and Brandin Cooks, in addition to a number of changes on defense as well.

Although the offense will be different in 2020, there still are a number of talented players on the roster. Cooper Kupp an Robert Woods still formed a very solid wide receiver duo while quarterback Jared Goff is also hoping to see backup wide receiver Josh Reynolds grow this year.

The Rams also have some good pieces at tight end as well. Tyler Higbee had his best season to date last year, really coming alive in the second half.

Gerald Everett also had a nice year at tight end, putting up a career-high in receiving yards while coming off the bench and also missing time due to injury. In 2020, head coach Sean McVay hopes to utilize more of Everett’s skillset, via Gary Klein of the Los Angeles Times:

“Tyler Higbee did a phenomenal job, but I think Gerald Everett is a guy that I’ve got to do a better job of really utilizing his skill set,” McVay said recently, “because he’s a difference-maker, but he’s got to get the opportunity.

“I think that starts with some of the things I know I can do a better job of.”

Everett has always shown flashes throughout his young career but has typically been relegated to a reserve role due to Higbee starting at tight end and the Rams former three-headed monster manning the wide receiver positions. With Cooks gone, it certainly opens up some time for Everett, especially in the passing game.

Last season, Everett only appeared in 40% of offensive snaps en route to 408 receiving yards and two touchdowns. With the indication that Everett will be getting even more playing time this year, hopefully he can help to add a new fold to the Rams’ offense.

McVay has been able to mastermind different offensive schemes each year and will no doubt be completely revisiting the offense this offseason. He should have some fresh ideas of how to handle his squad, thanks to the addition of Kevin O’Connell as the team’s new offensive coordinator. O’Connell took over as the Washington Redskins offensive coordinator last season and will hopefully bring in some new ideas that can help get Everett going in the passing game.
