The Los Angeles Rams didn’t have much to feel good about during the 2022 season as injuries decimated the roster and ruined any shot of defending their Super Bowl title.

The Rams’ season was full of disappointment and even some drama as the team had discussions about trading away Cam Akers, who had internal disagreements about his role and usage. However, the two sides were able to patch things up and Akers went on to have a great run to close out the year.

Now going into the offseason, Akers appears poised to take over the backfield full-time. Sean McVay had high praise for the running back and expressed his excitement to see what Akers can accomplish in the 2023 season, via Cameron DaSilva of USA Today:

“I think it’s big. I think for him, anytime that you’re able to have a level of success, and I think being able to go through what he did shows a lot about the human being,” McVay said this week. “He was able to have over 500 (yards) in the last (six) games and really be able to be a bright spot for us, and let’s continue to build on that. Excited about (RBs coach) Ron Gould and what he’ll be able to do with that room, but I know Cam’s had a great look in his eye. Expect him to continue to build on the way that he finished. Confidence is a powerful thing that can compound in the right ways, and he certainly has taken the steps to be able to do that and that’s a big deal. I’m really looking forward to watching him shine from start to finish this year.”

Akers looked every bit like the player Los Angeles drafted in the second round of the 2022 season, breaking tackles and exploding for chunk yards. As a runner, Akers has a knack for churning yards after contact but he’s also got great hands and can be a threat on third-down passing situations.

It’s a great story for Akers who has already had to overcome so much adversity early on in his career. If he’s able to pick up where he left off, then the Rams offense should be in pretty good shape.

Cam Akers says drama from 2022 season is behind him

The new-look Rams already have plenty of doubters after all the turnover from the offseason, though they still can lean on players like Akers. After some disagreements and drama, Akers said that it’s all behind him and he’s looking forward to next season.
