The Los Angeles Rams were unable to capitalize on a golden opportunity to right the ship as they were defeated by the San Francisco 49ers, 20-7, at home in Week 6.
It was a miserable day for the offense as everyone struggled against what has proven to be a solid San Francisco defense.
In his postgame press conference, Rams head coach McVay praised the 49ers for their effort and admitted that he needed to review the tape to see how his teams could have finished their drives better, via the Rams official Twitter:
“Yeah, it does. Credit them, they did a nice job. We started out and there was a handful of things that went on. It’s really why you can’t wait to just go back cause there was so many situations that took place after that first drive where we had some opportunities when you get it in there and you don’t punch it in from inside the one with a couple of chances. But there’s some things that really throughout the game- it’s kind of a little bit of a whirlwind. No excuses, but we’ll all look at it, we’ll figure out how to be better moving forward.”
Despite Los Angeles’ quick start in which they jumped out to a 7-0 lead before being held scoreless the rest of the game, McVay admitted that he and his players need to find ways to keep any positive momentum going in order to stay in games:
“I thought the guys came out ready to go. I mean to be able to have a seven-play drive, seven runs, all manageable down and distances. There was a good enthusiasm, there was a good juice and that was the way that you wanted to start. But we gotta do a better job after that of being able to continue that momentum and those are things that we’ll look to figure out how to do that.”
The Rams were without Todd Gurley as he is nursing a quad injury and it was apparent they missed their Pro Bowl running back. They were unable to convert on several short-yardage situations, including a 4th-and-1 at the goal line. The 49ers manhandled the offensive line and as a result, Jared Goff had one of the worst games of his career, only managing to throw for 78 yards.
At 3-3, Los Angeles is seriously starting to look like a team that may miss the postseason after their Super Bowl appearance. As things stand right now, they are their own worst enemy and need to correct things quickly if they hope to get back into the playoff race.
