Since coming to the Los Angeles Rams in 2017, head coach Sean McVay has done nothing but win.
McVay has yet to have a regular season record under .500 and has even led the Rams to two Super Bowl appearances. The 36-year-old made history again when he became the youngest head coach to win a Super Bowl after Los Angeles defeated the Cincinnati Bengals in Super Bowl LVI, cementing his status as one of the best coaches in the NFL.
Whenever a franchise finds a good head coach, it’s a smart move to keep them in the building for as long as possible. Earlier in training camp, McVay said he expected to have a contract extension done before Week 1 and he recently confirmed that he and the Rams agreed to a new deal, via Jourdan Rodrigue of The Athletic:
The Rams and coach Sean McVay have worked out a contract extension, he confirmed Tuesday afternoon.
McVay, 36, did not expand on the details of what is almost certainly a multiyear deal, because he said he wanted the team to announce his deal and general manager Les Snead’s at the same time. Snead’s own extension negotiations are ongoing.
“We wanted to announce that when both of us had gotten done,” McVay said. “Mine is done and Les is in the process of that. But I think in respect to wanting to show the partnership for us, I said, ‘You guys will know when we both get done.’”
McVay did not disclose terms of his new deal, but either way it’s a well-deserved extension given what he has done during his tenure with the team. The new deal ensures that McVay’s future is tied to Matthew Stafford, Aaron Donald and Cooper Kupp, who all also signed lucrative extensions this past offseason.
This should also put to bed any rumors that McVay is angling to turn his coaching success into a TV position any time soon. There were talks shortly after Super Bowl LVI ended that he could leave Los Angeles for the broadcast booth, but now it looks like he’ll be on the sidelines for at least the next few years.
As McVay mentioned, general manager Les Snead is also expected to be extended shortly. The pair of McVay and Snead have led the Rams organization back to greatness and will now continue to do so for years to come.
