Although the Los Angeles Rams have a number of voids to fill on their roster this offseason, Sean McVay is confident their backfield is set going into the 2019 NFL season.
While Todd Gurley has proven to be one of the premier running backs in the league, the Rams have made it clear that they will look to lessen his workload moving forward due to the knee injury he suffered down the final stretch of the 2018 season. This has made finding a complementary option a top priority for Los Angeles this offseason.
The Rams managed to address their need right away by tendering Brown as a restricted free agent. The front office later matched the Detroit Lions’ offer and signed him to a two-year, $3.3 million deal.
According to ESPN’s Lindsey Thiry, McVay is comfortable with how his backfield looks moving forward:
Sean McVay said the Rams “Feel pretty settled” with Todd Gurley and Malcolm Brown at running back.
There is good reason for McVay to be confident given Brown has been with the team since the 2015 season. Not only is he familiar with how things are done in Los Angeles but he has shown plenty of promise as a change-of-pace back for Gurley.
The former undrafted free agent rushed for 212 yards while tacking on five receptions for 52 yards and a touchdown in 12 games before missing the rest of the season due to a clavicle injury. As a result, Brown was forced to watch from the sidelines while new backup CJ Anderson took the league by storm with a resurgence of his own in place of an injured Gurley.
Aside from Brown, the Rams also invested a sixth round draft pick in John Kelly. While Kelly may have been passed over in favor of Anderson when Brown got injured, he was still able to get in the mix last year with 74 yards on 27 carries.
