CU football head coach Deion Sanders comes out of the locker room for the Rocky Mountain Showdown on Sept. 16, 2023 at Folsom Field in Boulder, Colo.

Sean McVay is hard at work guiding a new-look Los Angeles Rams team through the 2023 campaign, but he still has found time to look around the football landscape. And perhaps no one in all of football has made more headlines in the early part of this season than University of Colorado head coach Deion Sanders.

Sanders took over Colorado’s program this offseason and made sweeping changes, bringing in an entirely new collection of players, including his son and potential Heisman candidate quarterback Shadeur Sanders. The Buffaloes are 3-0 to begin their season, including a win over a ranked TCU program.

Colorado has a marquee matchup coming up this weekend against Pac-12 opponent Oregon, and a win would not only cement Colorado as a program with a national reach, but also Sanders as perhaps one of the best coaches in the nation.

McVay already recognizes the impact that Sanders has had on the Buffaloes, believing he would also make a great NFL coach, via 710 ESPN LA:

“Absolutely. He’s done a great job at a bunch of different levels. He’s a motivator. I really enjoyed the documentary that they did on him on Amazon Prime where you can really see the way he connects, the way he cares about these guys. Obviously, their football is really high-caliber in all three phases.”

McVay is undoubtedly one of the best coaches in the National Football League. In his first six seasons as the Rams head coach, he had a 60-38 regular season record, a 7-3 postseason record, two Super Bowl appearances and one Super Bowl championship. He is both the youngest head coach in NFL history to reach and win a Super Bowl.

So praise from a coach with that level of success certainly carries some weight. And there is no denying that Sanders is forging a path to becoming one of the best college coaches in the country. It’s still early in the coaching career of the Football Hall of Famer, but the returns have been nothing but strong.

McVay feeling encouraged after Week 2 loss

The Rams suffered a 30-23 loss to the San Francisco 49ers in Week 2, but McVay still walked away with a positive feeling for the 1-1 Rams. He felt the team got some important experiences for the rest of the season and kept things competitive most of the way.

“Today was a great opportunity for us to be able to learn, to be able to understand where that margin for error is but I love the look in these guy’s eye. I like the way that they continue to be able to compete through the finish and these are always learning opportunities for us. Some of this adversity presents opportunities and I’m excited to be able to go forward with these guys in the right way and I have no doubt they’re going do that same thing.”
