The Los Angeles Rams have been one of the hottest teams in football over the last three months, winning five consecutive games and nine of their last 11.
A big part of their success has been the returns of several key offensive players who missed time due to injuries. Cooper Kupp was sidelined for a month before returning in Week 7 and immediately returning to his old self.
However, the All-Pro wideout has been quiet as of late, catching only four passes for 53 yards and no touchdowns in his last three games.
Kupp has only been targeted nine times during the span, but Rams head coach Sean McVay believes he is making an impact in other ways. “I think he’s played well,” McVay said.
“I think it really comes down to are we getting opportunities? The receiver position is unique because there are so many things that you’re relying on to be able to be a factor, protection… Does the coverage dictate me getting the football and am I getting the opportunity? With what he can control, I think he’s done a good job.”
Kupp recently admitted that he was frustrated after not catching a pass against the San Francisco 49ers in Week 14. “You’re obviously frustrated,” Kupp said after the Rams’ 12-6 win.
“You want to be able to contribute in the pass game and that goes without saying. I don’t think anyone needs to say that they want to be able to have opportunities to touch the ball, but at the same time the way that game played out, that’s not what I was asked to do and I’m going to execute whatever they’re asking me.
“That’s been our thing here for years. Whatever it’s going to take to win, that’s what we have to do. We have the right guys in the building to understand that and that’s what we pride ourselves on. We’re going to do it. We know in the receiver room that if we come in and they ask us like, ‘Hey, we’re going 12-personnel and we’re running the ball every time this week,’ it’s like, ‘Hey, let’s go. Let’s figure out how we’re going to make that happen and how to make it come to life.’ The way that game played out, that’s what I was asked to do.”
Despite his recent slump, Kupp is still having a solid year as he has caught 67 of his 100 targets for 710 yards and six touchdowns in 12 games (11 starts).
